Stem tape and how to use it
Types of stem tape
There are three types of stem tape widely available. All three tapes are used to cover stem ends to:
seal in the moisture
give extra hold
disguise the wire
give a professional finish
1. Guttapercha – this is a natural product that produces a fine and elegant finish.
2. Parafilm tape – a man-made product which is popular amongst many florists.
3. Semtex – easy to use when starting out but rather sticky especially in warm weather – the finish is not quite as fine as with (1) and (2).
How to use stem tape
First practice on a straight wire to get the technique which is as follows:
1. Take a strong gauge straight wire and hold it vertically in your left hand if you are right-handed and in your right hand if you are left handed.
2. Wrap the tape one and a half or two times around the tip of the wire.
3. Pull the tape down at an angle of about 135 degrees and pull to make the tape taught – almost to the point of breaking.
4. Twirl the wire around with the left hand. Keep the tape firm with Ihc right and let it wrap round the wire.
N13. When binding a wire and stem logger wilt stem tape start above I he join. Each turn should overlap by about a half or less.
