Amber Inventory
A major and characteristic part of the finds from Silinupe consists of amber. Amber finds occurred already in the uppermost layer of peat, with the densest concentration in a 30 cm thick greyish sand layer under the peat. Individual pieces of amber were also found in washed-up layers of branches and bark above the sandy/gravelly natural subsoil. In the excavated part of the site, amber was quite uniformly distributed, with a slightly greater concentration in the dwelling-place. Around a hearth on the western side of the settlement more intense concentration of different artifacts was observed. Finished and half-finished amber objects (beads) were found there, as well as amber flakes, splinters and natural lumps. Perhaps, this area could be regarded as an amber workshop. Part of the recovered amber was covered with natural weathering crust, while the flaked amber pieces, worked into ornaments, when they were brought out into the light of day once again, reflected a reddish and intensely yellow light.
